Mossies this year?

With the heavy snows I’m imagining the mosquitoes are bad. I still wanted to ask though. I’m starting on August 8th at Red Meadows and going South all the way.

I ask this because one of the things I’ve loved about hiking out West (I’m from black fly country out East) is the dearth of mossies. I know they can be bad, but I’ve had bug free / limited bug experience after experience…Are they bad this year? Is my image of the West being superior to the East when it comes to less annoying biting insects going to be challenged on this great trail ? Any primary sources would be appreciated?

Very bad. I think even in August they will be. Evolution Valley was especially thick with them, but that changes week to week. Expect the worst, camp high.

I’m going into the Ansel Adams Wilderness this weekend and will let you know how it is. In August you should be o.k. though. I hiked the JMT in Aug '06 which was one of the heaviest snow years on record and there were virtually no mosquitoes then. This year was just an average snow year and there was quite a bit of melt early in the year. You’re image of the west won’t be challenged. As I always say, “the west coast is the best coast!”

from the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Very few mosquitoes around 1000 Island Lake. Mild around Rush Creek Trail, none on Island Pass. By the time you’re out there it should be fine. Happy hiking!

They were pretty thick this week in Yosemite, even with the smoke in the air, but mostly in the meadows and definitely worse in the evenings.
