Least Scenic - I know its been replaced since I was on it many years ago but I’ll assume the part that replaced the damn roadwalk in Pennsylvania.

Most Scenic - Katahdin, raises out of nowhere!!!

That is sooooo many different things to sooooo many people. It really is more what state of mind you are in at a given time than anything. If life is going great even Gary Indiana looks good. My favorite spots are:

Georgia and North Carolina
any of the Highlands
The Smokies, in particular from Charlie’s Bunion thru Mount Cammererererer (or however that is spelled)
Little Rock Knob
Roan Mountain to 19E
McAfee Knob to Tinker cliffs
The Diddler’s trailer eating a burger from Momma (ask Chef)
Annapolis Rocks
Vermudd
New Hampshire… I love going down Moosilauke
Maine - got to love those microbrews… Northcountry…
yes, of course Katahdin… A seriously beautiful feeling

Least Liked spots…

The Diddler’s trailer on my stomach (ask Chef)
19E to Dennis Cove Road (much better in the last few years)
Pennsylvania… not because of rocks… too many roads
Maryland
Boiling Springs to the Doyle…
The morning after the Doyle…

Of the 1200+ miles I’ve hiked on the AT, I’ve passed over many spectacularly beautiful mountains, but the scene that rests in my heart is the valley around Overmountain Shelter just north of Roan Mountain. The least scenic is any day when it’s pouring rain and all you see is the muddy trail, your hiking boots, and the boots of the person in front of you. Which was pretty much the case when I walked through the valley north of Boiling Springs which is flat farm land interspersed with multiple highway and freeway crossings. But the home-style dinner at the restaurant next to the Appalachian Motor Inn that night made up for the whole soggy day.

Of course, it’s awesome everywhere you look. But I do have to say McAfee’s Knob (try to get a clear afternoon for this one), Mt. Camerer, White Mountains, and Virginia in general were the nicest points off the top of my head. Of course, weather will alter your perception of the BEST places.

The worst would definitely have to be the trash and vandalism (sp?) in Tennessee. It’s disgusting. Trash everywhere and not a friendly place.

Again, opinions…

I have hiked but a few hundred miles of the AT, but the Appalachian Crest northbound from Glencliff, NH stands out for me. Katahdin was spectacular, but my weather wasn’t. I was on Mt. Moosilaukee twice, in July 95 and December 01, both glorious sunny days. The view from there to the northeast to the Franconia Ridge and Distant Presidentials is as fine as I’ve seen out East. Falling Waters is a botanical masterpiece! I have always dreamed of having northern hardwoods in western valleys. The previous comment about state of mind is quite true because my lowest point was a Thunderstorm on the Franconia Ridge just a few months before an incredibly wonderful day in the same spot.
