I have read many posts on what rain wear does what and how each performs, but I haven’t heard many people mention MH’s Epic. Anyone have any opinions on this light outer shell (besides price)?

Epic, the fabric, super stuff, Epic, Pertex and some others are the new generation of DWR fabrics to come along. They come in different weights and finishes. Check out this link for more info. http://www.pointnorth.co.uk/shop_cat.asp?cat_id=1 The jacket named Epic, dunno. Could be the same stuff.

Point North has Pertex 4 which is on my Mountain Hardwear Universe SL bag. The Conduit Shell is Pertex 4. Epic is hard to find. I think, and they won’t tell me, its a silicone coated fiber that makes it work, not a full coat OF silicone but I’d be guessing. It sheds water like a duck. Well worth the upgrade if you’re looking at bags or other down gear. We got some down jackets from Feathered Friends in Epic shells and you can wear them in the rain and they don’t get wet.

The epic fabric has all the fibers encapsulated in silicon prior to weaving. Their site has some info on the fabric.

I hadn’t realized that when I made the post. I thought the EPIC was just the name MH gave the shell. Anyway, I was referring to the jacket on MH’s website. I have read about Frogg Toggs, Precips, and others, but never any mention of MH’s rain wear. I have always loved MH’s products–from bags, to tents, to clothes, and would love to hear any product reviews on this product. So, any ideas…

I recently bought the Epic jacket for kayak camping it worked great! I used it rolled up to keep stuff dry on top of the boat while paddling and everything stayed perfectly dry. It is decently light, and has good ventilation. Originally ordered it online but then found out it was on backorder. I was then able to find it at a ski store that had some left over from spring. I love this jacket.

Go w/ the Marmot Precip Jacket and full zip Precip Pants, you will be very happy.
