Has anyone tried the Mountain House hamburger patties with mashed potatoes? If so are they any good, and do you prefer to dump hot water in the packet or fry it in a pan?

At one point I made a large order to Mountain House and they asked me if I wanted to be a tester for new products. One of the products was the hamburger and Mashed potatoes. The potatoes I thought were not very good. You could do better with generic potato buds. I reconstituted the burger with boiling water per instructions and found it to be remarkably good. Now don’t get me wrong, it will never replace a grilled burger but it did have the consistency and flavor of a very lean burger. I now carry them with me when I can get my hands on them. After a long day its nice to eat something that resembles meat. You would have to reconstitute it with water even if you were going to fry it in a pan but I would think that frying it in Parkay would add some fat and a little more flavor.

The burgers are decent, the chicken breast version is actually tasty. Personally, if they’d sell it plain, I’d be happy as I could them in my recipes.
But overall…you can do much better and cheaper making the taters yourself!

The mashed potatoes and burger isnt bad. The burger needs to be rehydrated VERY well or its more like beef jerky than hamburger. The potatoes need TONS of salt in my opinion. For some reason my gravy packet that is mentioned in the instructions, was missing from BOTH of my meals. Which really ticked me off at the time, because plain potatoes and beef sucks.

The red beans and rice was rather tasty though. As crazy as I am, I actually ate half that night, and the other half for breakfast the next morning. I figured the 30 degree temps that night were cold enough to “refrigerate” it till morning.

Of course when your exhausted and hungry as hell, anything tastes good.

Whats really funny is that mountain house makes “PRO” packs…and they weigh more and cost more, and make less food than the “non-PRO” packs. hehehehe…marketing gimmick aimed right at inexperienced hikers…POW
:lol

I say just buy a food dehydrator from wally world for 20 bucks and make your own mountain house vittles.

You have to wonder what they put in that stuff though. Have you ever looked at the nutritional information? Wow!

Morningstar farms makes frozen soyburgers which are very good. You can find them in most of the grocery stores in my area.

As an experiment, I thawed and then marinated them a few different ways and then dried them in a dehydrator. They actually came out ok when rehydrated.
