I use a 256 MB RCA Lyra with a slot for SD cards. It’s small, relatively light and cheap enough at $90 to get trashed without crying too much. Runs on one AAA battery. My logic is that I can keep a ‘core’ batch of songs in the .mp3 player and swap out SD cards with different types of music as my mood suits. 256 MB is enough for 8 - 9 full CD’s.

I used an MP3 player on the trail, can’t quite remember the brand or whatever. However, I did not use memory cards but recorded 100 songs or whatever fit into 256 MB but I also had a FM radio on mine. The best thing was that as I got sick of songs, I would just delete them and then I could record things off the radio that I liked. It worked out really well, so I would say that whatever player you get, make sure it has this feature because a song you love when you start the trail might make you crazy after 2 months.

From a previous thread about books to MP3; worked fine, took one on a trip to So. Cal. Drowned out the scREEEming kids on the plane. Be cool if you had cards and could have someone load you books for your whole trip. Get some serious sci-fi in, All Creatures Great and Small, The Star Wars Unabridged version is cool, All of Sue Grafton’s stuff. Just my random brainless thoughts ooh something shiny…

IPODs can be hit or miss. Im on my 4th 40GB IPOD. I had many different problems with the last 3. The warranty is great though. The biggest problem is the battery life. They advertise something like 10-12 hrs of life per charge. NOT TRUE…more like 6-7 hrs. The good thing is you can by a Belkin add on that uses 4 AAs and gives you more life after the internal battery dies. Its the only hard drive mp3 that has an add on which is why I got it. I would check out apples ipod help page before buying one just to get an idea of the many many problems. The other option (and much cheaper) is to buy an mp3 cd player. Mine uses only 2 AAs and they last a long time. Just burn a bunch of discs and bounce them ahead.

Look at what you are getting, not brand.

Flash based equals low battery use and no moving parts to break. Get as much memory as you can afford. I need more than 256 MB but you may not.

Built in Radio.

Built in voice recorder to make mental notes before you forget them and to avoid having to dig for a pencil and paper while moving.

Backlight display.

A handful of players with these features are around but last time I checked the best place to purchase was on line. Bestbuy and friends did not have many with all of these features but that may have changed by now.

I just bought an IRiver 1GB (can’t remember the exact nubber, something like XXX-899). Anway, it is great! Here are a few of the perks:

40 Hours of actual battery life
FM Radio
Can record songs off of the radio and convert them to MP3
Voice Recorder
Light, uses one AA battery

It was a little pricey at $199, but I think it is worth it. It also came with a pretty nice case that should protect it pretty well. I would recommend buying from Bestbuy and getting the protection plan. Then if anything happens you can get it exchanged. (unless it is lost or stolen) Well worth the extra $20 IMHO.

PCT06, I believe you’re talking about the Iriver 799. This is a great MP3 player. You can find them on Ebay for around $150-175. I have an Ipod, but will make the transition to the 799 in the near future for the 40 hours on one battery and FM radio features. I believe it weighs about 2-3 oz as well.

Does anyone know of any other internal drive players that run only on alkaline batteries?

Are there any that hold more than 1GB?

Munch, none that use Flash memory. I’m sure you will some some in the near future though. The 799 is the only 1 GB internal flash player I know of.
