MREs - John Muir Trail

I did 3/4 of the AT in early 2002 eating only MREs. I found that they were very easy to pack and were relativly light when one factored in what you got when eating the entree alone.
I am planning a JMT hike and am conflicted about dyhidrating meals or using MREs again.

If you liked the MRE’s on the trail and can still stomach the thought of them, then go that route again. I rock a gronala bar, raisons and a hammer nutrition HEAD drink for B-fast.
Lunch- Cheese, jerky, or alomd butter and stawberry perserve with a tort, plus Hammer PERPETUEM drink.
Dinner- Deh Potatos or a soup, Hammer Recoverite drink plus a snikers.
Snack- honey sticks, humas, hard candy, emergenC, cliff shot block,

But thats what works for me. HYOH

Good luck!

You say that you’re conflicted and you want help making your decision about foods. But you seem to already have all of the information you need. My suggestion is to do a pro/con list to help you choose. You know how much these options cost, taste, smell, etc., just make some lists that rank these criteria to you, personally.

My questions to help you along are; did you really ONLY eat MREs, or were they just your main “meals” on the trail? Try a Snickers Bar as a treat in the afternoons, they rock. Also, why did you only hike 3/4 of the AT in 2002? Was that your choice to stop hiking? Or were other factors influencing you? If the MREs were a factor (negatively), then I don’t reccomend ever eating them again. Eat food for success. Or, as JW said, “go with what works” and HYOH!!!
