Mt. Rogers NRA - need info for weeklong campout

Hey there,
First, let me start by saying that I’m about 90% camping & only about 10% backpacking. The reason I’m posting here, is that I figured this is the best place to connect with folks who would know the area I’m talking about

We’re looking to do a hike in (2-4 miles) to a base camp and stay for a week in the Mt Rogers NRA. I know that we want to be somewhere above 3500 feet, near water, have some trails around us for day hikes, and have a safe place to leave the car.

I’ve not had much luck with getting info from the rangers, except that I need to not park on 603.

Anybody out there ever camp in this area, may be not specifically on the AT, that can give some suggestions of places to look into?

We’re just looking to get out in the middle of nowhere without other people around.

Many thanks for any help!

Go to Grayson Highlands State Park and park in the backpackers overnight parking lot. Hike to the AT in about a mile and head southbound on the AT thru Wilbur Ridge to Rhodo Gap. Avoid the crowds by camping near the spring which has a fence to keep out the ponies. There is a great spot just below the spring on the right. Dayhike from there to Thomas Knob shelter and Mt Rogers or Pine Mt trail to Scales and do a loop.

Depending on your vehicle, you could “car camp” at The Scales which has toilets and I believe water. The AT cuts right through there so you have plenty of options for hiking.

Thanks Kerry & Sam,
I like the GHSP idea.

So, Kerry, is that spring you’re talking about in Rhododendrum Gap? I don’t have the map with me right now.
Is that a popular area, or off the beaten path?

Sam, are you saying 4x4 is needed, or just high ground clearance, to drive up to Scales? Do you drive fin rom GHSP, or from the north? This might be a good alternative, if my shoulder does not heal up by then.

Thanks,

When you arrive at Rhodo Gap the spring is SW between the Crest trail and Rhodo Gap horse trails. You will see the path down to the spring and the campsite is below there on the right. I have stayed there 2 times and it is off the main trails and semi-private. I am giving up one of my “secret” favorite camp spots here.

You could actually camp here on one night then hike Pine Mt trail to the AT take a right camp at Scales, then hike to Wise and camp there then return to your vehicle. That is what I would do if I had a week. Remember to take one dayhike to Thomas Knob and Mt. Rogers. There is no view on Mt. Rogers but a must do for peak baggers, as it is the tallest in VA.

Thanks.
I’m sure that will keep the bears away (along with everyone & eveything else)!
