My A.T. dream - Appalachian Trail

You know a couple nights ago I had a dream about the A.T. in the future. But you know, it might not have been a dream at all. I may have been seeing into the future …

It was I’d say, maybe 20 years from now, 2020s sometime. It was on the Georgia section of the A.T., in spring or summer. The trail was much wider then and worn looking, and there weren’t as much woods or bushes around the sides as now. And lots of people were on the trail, in groups and crowds. Well over 1,000 people easy on the stretch I saw on that bright sun shiny day.

By then, the A.T. was a household word and people headed out in droves during the warmer months. Corporations sponsored all kinds of outings on the A.T. all the time, lots of Hoodz In the Woodz groups and all kinds of people were there. There were vendor stands by the side of the trail selling food from buildings with lots of shade to stand under and cool off, people were carrying plastic soda bottles and day chairs, kind of like a parade crowd or festival.

Then I saw this girl from Philly I knew, she was about to head down a side trail that was lots less used than the A.T. cause all the people used the A.T. all the time but didn’t go down the rabbit trails very much. And I followed her and someone else down this trail down a gully, through these rocks and it went down and curved this way and that, down and away from the thongs of people up above.

And we came to these restrooms by the trail and I had diarreah, and the girl said there’s these anti-diarreah pills in a slot in the soap dispenser tray. So I opened it up and yes there was a pill there, but it was all grody and moist and sitting on part of a bar of soap like it had been there awhile. So I was thinking about getting a fresh anti-diarreah pill from the vending machine at the front of the restroom.

Then we were back up on the A.T. and most of the crowds had gone back toward the exit ramps but there was a few hanging back and this kid said he’d take our picture. Then I woke up.

Do you think the A.T. will be like that in 20 or 30 years, it really was depressing maybe that’s why I got upset diarrhea

The trail setting was just an abstract. The dream was about going down the private trail with the girl, you were nervous and couldnt follow thru.the pill represented a condom that you wernt sure about buying. No wonder it was depressing.

lol, i have to admit the answers are as good as the dream.

The real danger to the AT would be the eventual highrises and subdivisions that will take it over. Some one will say in congress, due to the population explosion, all federal lands will be opened up to lease options to selected corporations who have demonstrated their ability to develop land in an ecological way.

The AMC management system will be one of the corporations that will head that list, having years and years of experience developing nature sinsitive outtings for a century.

This will only happen because of the environmentalist are also a tad reserved when it comes to over population, thus fewer kids to produce the votes to overcome such a likelihood. Thus the republicans will over populate the earth and take what they want. Cause they make babies like shelter mice.

100 years ago very few people would have forseen the boom in outdoor recreation. 200 years ago it was done for the need to find satisfactory land to grow crops and hunting grounds to feed their family. They would have never considered the “ideals” we have come to justify today.

200 years from now, when Atlanta and NYC are actually suburbs of each other, we as a global community will have different ideals for what is best for recreation. I would relax. Sons of the pioneers are enemies of the pioneering spirit.

Maybe our grand kids will conquer GameBoy Backpacking.

Sounds to me like youve been eating those mints that old ladies give childen out of their purses. You know the ones, theyve been in there for about three years and they have lint all over them because theyve come unwrapped.

“Thus the republicans will over populate the earth and take what they want. Cause they make babies like shelter mice.”

In the first place, Republicans do not reproduce at a higher rate than Democrats. If you accept the standard claim that Republicans tend to be upperclass, white anglo-saxon protestants, then reproduction rates for that group are lower than for all other groups. Statistically, the higher reproductive rates are in groups that have traditionally voted Democratic.

In the second place, just because their parents are Republican doesn’t mean the children will be Republican also. People have free will, and children will choose their own political beliefs.

In the third place, you’re too nice a guy to go around insulting people intentionally, so I know you didn’t mean to offend anyone with your remark. I should point out, though, that some people would not appreciate being told that they “breed like shelter mice.” And who knows? There might be a few registered Republicans on the forum. Other people around here might not care about their feelings, but I don’t think you’re like that.

Yeah, I can see those high rises popping up in Mahoosuc Notch. Not.

What I think will happen is the Maine Appalachian Trail Club will secede from the rest of the AT and will therefore be sheltered from your highrises and suburbs. :nerd

if you grade it, trailbikers and SUV rivers will come.
if you pave it with gold bricks, ghetto kids will come and steal em.
