Mysterious mountain markings in virginia

as i was posting a few more pictures from our trek last year, i came across this one in particular of a mountain with some very strange formations/ markings on its slopes…i was wondering if anyone could positively identify this mountain…(the easiest way to see this photo right now, i think, is to go to our “list”, 2006 maw-ee and paw-ee, and then select the “niday shelter” entry…it should have a picture of iris verna there…just click on the iris and go forward about 29 photos and you’ll see this geological phenomenon!)

I dont think the rocks are in virginia they are the rocks are at the south end of the Smokies at Rocky Top. the locals were stone carvers here.

thanks, fletch…(i’ll hafta have a look near rocky top some day)…but i’m certain we were much further north…somewhere in the vicinity, i think, of the james river to the tye river…perhaps the formations can only be seen in winter or early spring…(we were there in april)…to see the “markings”, you would be traveling northbound and this mountain then can be viewed off to your left, i think…maybe some of you geologists out there can at least describe what is seen in my photo…(hey, rockhound '03!..how 'bout it!)

maw-ee: I’ve walked thru that area four times and have never seen those rock formations, probably b/c of leaf cover…

My guess is that its near the Priest
