Nah-ma-kan-ta, people!

I saw it a month ago, and it still bothers me. Not that I’m up 'til two in the morning, but . . . just kind of irked by it.

It’s the inability of people to spell. I’m not going to go on about grammar, it’s just . . . I don’t know.

The best example of bad spelling is Nahmakanta Lake. Yeah, the Lake part is spelled right, but the first word?

Can you say butchered?

In the same register (@ Cooper Brook, I think), I saw Namakanta spelled as “Nemekanda” and also “Nemi-whatever” Even “Nesuntabunt Lake”, which doesn’t exist.

Yes, I know Maine had some place-names difficult to pronounce - try saying “Aboljacknegarssic” or “Chemquasebamticook” three times fast - but really, I get a bit irked when people don’t even try.

“Nemi-whatever”. Whatever, dude.

But you know, I’ve never seen or heard anyone butcher “Nantahala.” Have you? No! No one has. That’s cause no one does.

So why is Namakanta so hard?

I mean, if you can say “Nan Ta Ha La”

why is “Nah Ma Kan Ta” so hard?

I hope it’s not because they think Nantahala is anymore beautiful than Namakanta. Hoo, gosh, no. I mean, Cheoah Bald is awesome, NOC’s food is good, nice river, but come on . . .

You can see Katahdin from there (from Nesuntabunt, anyhow). And everyone can spell Kah Ta Din, right? Even Ma Hoo Suc. Pe Nob Scot.

I see “Nemi-whatever” one more time, I’m gonna . . . bleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Now, I’m confused Kineo Kid. Is it Katahdin or Kahtadin? Seems like you don’t always know how to spell either… Sorry guys, I couldn’t help myself.

Ordinarily I take issue with the sad, self-appointed Spelling Nazi’s that lurk in every forum in the world. My best guess is that it makes them feel better about themselves, proving to all that they are intellectually superior, and perhaps compensating for…ummmm, well, yeah.

I even did a quick purview of Mr. Keene’s contributions, and while I do acknowledge that his grammar and spelling skills are indeed stellar, I’d recommend two things: 1) Figure out on which side of the numeral the percentage sign belongs (hint, it’s the OTHER side, not counting top or bottom). And 2) Quit criticizing everybody; geesh!

But…this isn’t one of those times. I’m actually going to just let it go, because I really DID get a chuckle from the post! Nice one. QUOTE: “I mean, if you can say ‘Nan Ta Ha La’ why is ‘Nah Ma Kan Ta’ so hard?” END QUOTE. Heh heh! LMAO!!!

I do agree, there are some pretty funny and outrageous literary mutilations out there, and your depictions here are hilarious. But, wow…watch your blood pressure over it, k? :tongue

…i feel sorry for him. I’ve taken on “Grammar Coach” before, because his posts are so derogatory and mean-spirited. But Mr. Nahmakanta seems so personally moved, that i want to take his side. Perhaps this place is very special to him for very important personal reasons. Part of that meaning is tied into the individual, native american influenced (at least) name it has. Seeing the name misspelled feels like disrespect has been shown for his special place.

I’ll take a vow to always spell checking the name again Nahmakanta correctly. Everyone take it with me. Nahmakanta. Will do.

By the way, where is it? Kewl place to visit??? I’ll add it to my to-do list.

p.s. for years, before visiting Katahdin, i thought it was pronounced Cat-uh-din, like the water filter. You don’t even wanna know how i used to pronounce “Tuolumne.”

Yeah, I spelled Katahdin wrong, but where’s the points for spelling “Chemquasebamticook?” And no, I didn’t make it up;)

Hey, I really am no Grammar Coach. Gosh no. Maybe someone with a bit too much time on his hands, hey, whatever.

But . .
“Seeing the name misspelled feels like disrespect has been shown for his special place.”

First off, it’s not MY special place, necessarily. I think everyone should come check it out (and the Debsconeag ponds, too!).

Odd that no one so far has taken umbrage to the Nahmakanta being better than Nantahala.

Surely someone thinks otherwise.

Hey on the PCT all the cool kids say T- meadows instead of trying to pronounce Tuolomene. Here in Mammoth lakes theres bumper stickers saying Mammoth not MamMETH both pronounced the same. Try the PCT and listen to all the hikers various pronunciation of all the Spanish place names in the South. Go to Alaska and say Mt. Mckinley and people will look at you and say “you mean Denali”?

I happen to be one of those irritating “spell it right” persons…but I try never to open my mouth about it in forums.

Thanks for the hilarious comebacks-you guys made my day!
