National Geo - Appalachian Trail

I’m getting ready to throw out 12 years of National Geographic (the original yellow cover types, not the Adventure mag). Does anyone know off hand if there was an article about the AT in any of the years from 1992-present that I should pull out and keep? Or the PCT for that matter too? I don’t have any kind of index for them. thanks!

Bluebearee, I just went to National Geographics website and
typed in “Appalachian Trail” and they showed 59 different sites
to look at. Hope this helps.

I was able to do a search of the magazine articles through a university database access and the only articles in the print version of National Geographic relating to the AT, PCT, CDT, were from the 70’s. There was an article on hiking 3 peaks in Great Britain in July 2003…I guess articles on hiking in America are passe?
In a related topic, Bushwhack send Hungry Howie a book on the PCT that was written by 2 National Geographic photographers in the 70’s. Anyone interested in checking it out could contact him.

Hey Bramble, the university database must not work…there was a very famous article in the NG in the late 1980s…probably 87ish…that resulted in a lot of foreign hikers coming over after reading about the trail for the first time.

There are 4 articles in the National Geographic Database printed about the AT since the magazine began publishing:

  1. “Canadian Connection for the Applalachian Trail?”, Earth Almanac pages, Dec. 1994;

  2. “A Tunnel Through Time: The Appalachian Trail”, Pgs. 216-243, Feb. 1987;

  3. “Pack Trip Through The Smokies”, Pgs. 473-502, Oct. 1952;

  4. “Skyline Trail From Maine To Georgia”, Pgs. 219-251, Aug. 1949.

Actually, I was really only looking for articles later than 1992. Must of missed the 94 article.

Well, I realize this, but figured it would be interesting to do a search - and post - the results of the AT search on the entire NG database.

You never know who may have a collection, or access to a collection, that spans earlier than 1992, particularly since you can get the entire historical collection of NG on CD today.

Bluebearee, instead of tossing those mags see if you can donate them to a Church group, youth camps, Boy/girl scouts, or other youth organizations. NG has a lot of great information that nonprofit organizations may enjoy keeping for projects or whatever. Think about it. I’d hate to see 10+ years of NG ending up rotting away in a landfill.
peace and happy hiking!
