So, has anyone heard of any naked hikers today?

How about some stories of past years?

I don’t think this is a good idea because 1) Most hikers are dudes 2) A lot of hikers are retired 3) Branches, chafing, bugbites, and other outdoor annoyances become serious dangers when naked. So I don’t really feel too bad about missing a bunch of old, rashy, balls.

I agree with Ed. Who cares? National Hiking Naked Day is like that large mass nude photo shoot in Mexico City last month. 50,000 people show up to participate in the nude photo shoot and 49,998 of them are men. :lol

Destination: Rockfish Gap/Waynesboro VA
Starting Location: Seeley-Woodworth Shelter

Today’s Miles: 41.60
Trip Miles: 826.90

Every once in a while I think you need to test yourself. Today was that day. I got up at 5:30 AM to get an early start and originally the group was planning on only doing 30 miles. Six miles into the day, at Spy Rock, we came across Renegade Ron’s tent and decided to watch the sunrise from the top of the summit. When we got back Renegade was up and we all hit the trail.
Throughout the day I knew that I wanted to see if I could make it into town. By the time we all reached Marpin Field Shelter it was 5:00 PM and we had done 20 miles. At that point I informed the group that I was pushing for town. Everybody’s eyes got big, words of encouragement followed and I was on my way.I still had 21 miles to do and it was late in the afternoon. I remembered looking at the map before I left and I thought it looked pretty easy. I was wrong. The trail was rocky and there were several steep ascents. The weather was on my side because the sky was clear and almost a full moon so I was able to walk well into the evening without my headlamp on. I wanted to save my batteries. After about 27 stubbed toes and turned ankles I made it to the shelter 5 miles from town. It was 10:37 PM and I was out of water, so I sat in the pitch darkness filtering water, had a snack and left a note for the rest of the crew in the shelter log. I finally made it to the road at 12:17 AM, I had done it. I was delirious from exhaustion and wanted to sleep. So I made my way over to a pay phone to call a taxi to get a ride into town. I also called my parents to fill them in.

The first day of summer is celebrated on the AT by hiking naked. There on the trail in the pitch darkness I hiked the last 5 miles in the buff. It’s a good thing too because during the day I ran into about 60-70 girl/boy scouts!

in 05 the only people I saw apart from the shelter was two older ladies out day-hiking. I had shorts on but no shirt, and they said “just short? well, you’re almost there.” It was pretty odd, these old ladies out there dayhiking to see a different sort of nature. but then there’s probably ten times more guys out there hoping for some gaggle of co-eds to come bouncing up the trail.
the whole thing’s much less of the big deal that chat rooms make it out to be every year at this time.
