Does anyone have experience hiking from northern Georgia to Clingman’s Dome in mid-June? I’m considering the option, but am wondering if it will be hot, buggy, and “messy” from the thru-herd that will have passed a month or 2 earlier.

Coming from a dayhiker, (hopefully part of the class of '09) hiking in mid-June in the Smokies can be buggy, but there is no telling. I have seen gnats so thick that one has to cover their mouth to get through a wall of them. Also, the Smokies can be a bad place to get caught in afternoon summer storms (I know that I have been caught in a couple of storms on dayhikes) While raining, the bugs did not seem to be too bad, but after the rain let up, they were the pits! Might have just been the trails that I chose to take on those particular days though.
Regarding the temperature, there really is no telling. I have seen the temperatures as high as low 90s and as low as the 40s in June or even in the 60s in early November.

I was on Clingman’s last June 6 and the low that night was 35 with highs in low 60’s. We tried to get our miles in early before the afternoon storms.
