NC to GA shuttle

I’m planning to do 110 miles from Unicoi Gap GA to Fontana Dam NC this year, and there is one little problem: how to get back to my truck in GA when I’m done. Just wondering whether a shuttle of this distance is economical, should I try to take the bus, etc… What’s the best way to get back to GA from Fontana Dam?

I am trying another section as well… Starting from Winding Stair Gap to somewhere in the Smokies. What ever 10 days of hiking will get me… I figure I will park my car At Winding Stair… but any suggestions on how to get back cheaply would be appreciated…

I’ll be going the two weeks starting 19 June. Time and place are pretty well set, because I finished up at Unicoi Gap last year and I’m going hiking while my wife is helping at a church camp for the first week. She’ll meet me at the end of the 2d week. So far anywhere from 1 to 4 in the party, depending on work commitments. I’ve already spent $$ on gear, so I’m going no matter what.

Are you concerned about shelter reservations in GSMNP? I’ve heard space is tight.

Check this site out, they have a list of shuttles throughout the AT. http://www.appalachiantrail.org

I don’t think there is any good parking at Winding Stair Gap.

As a veteran section hiker make your arrangement a month in advance, call a week before you leave and then one last call the night before you have the shuttle. It is best to park your car somewhere close to your end destination. Take the shuttle to your starting point. That way you will not smell as bad, your car will be there when you are finished, it is good motivation, it is difficult to make arrangements to be picked up because of time, day etc.

I just paid $ 100 bucks for a shuttle from NOC to Hiawassee. A lot?? I don’t think so. She waited for me after her work was over, drove an hour one way, then had to drive back an hour to her place.

Winding Stair Gap has a grassy area you might park in, but Trucks use the area to ‘cool off their brakes’ and I’ve been there when there’s been broken window glass left on the parking area. A safer place would be Standing Indian Campground, which is nearby. You can pay the attendant $2 a day to park your car and have him watch it for you. You should be able to get a hitch from Standing Indian Campground to Winding Stair Gap.
