The nearest town is Hiawassee, GA, which is about 10 miles to the west on Highway 76. The town of Clayton, GA is about 20 miles to the east on Highway 76, from where the AT crosses the road. It is a very easy hitch, and Hiawassee is more hiker-suitable. Nearly every AT thru-hiker visits Hiawassee, while very few visit Clayton. I hope this helps.
