Check out Jonathon Ley’s 2008 CDT ROM at www.phlumf.com. Maps from Canada to Mexico, complete with helpful notes. Great package made available in return for a donation.

You will not be starting from Canada May 1. More like June 15th.

If this coming winter and spring are like 2008, you won’t be starting until closer to July 15.

They’re probably right. I’m in Whitefish, MT and we’re already hearing talk of another heavy snow year. Time will tell, but right now the best advice anybody can give are to stay flexible with your plans.

I think what we’re trying to suggest is that if you want/need to start May 1st, you’d do better to start at the Mexican border and hike north. May is still the dead of winter in the northern Rockies.

Watch snow levels for both MT and southern CO at snotel early in 2009. If snow levels are not too high in the south, consider a NoBo hike. In 2002 we planned a SoBo CDT but Glacier snow was 200% normal. S CO had about 35% normal so we hiked a complete NoBo hike. May 1 would be a good target start date at the bootheel of NM. Hiking one direction really simplifies the hike and we finished mid September before there was snow on the ground at Glacier.
