Need permit? - Pacific Crest Trail

This may sound incredibly ignorant and silly…

I’m considering going out to hike Red’s Meadow to Tuolomne and Sonora Pass to Echo Lake in late August.

Do I need a permit? Is it too late? How do I acquire one?

I’ve only had an all-encompassing thru-hiker permit.

Thanks for any help.

Yeah man you need a Seperate one for, Devils Postpile, Ansel Adams Wilderness, Yosemite, Hoover Wilderness, and Mokulmne Wilderness. Good Luck on the Yosemite ones. Just get the Thru hiker one. Aren’t you planning in the back of your mind to at least attempt 500 miles? You might be able to self register though in the Wilderness areas. I know the Hoover Wilderness has self register, and then you can pass through anywhere. Good Luck with that. Maybe you can get a PCT Thruhiker Permit say starting in August with an intentional flip flop ending next year sometime. Not sure of the legalities but I think Loopholes abound. Yosemite is the only place you might get hasseled. Less of a chance of hassle if you have a bear can in plain view and just say your a PCT hiker. Which you are. You won’t see any rangers that will hassle you anywhere outside Yosemite.

A suggestion; Southbound from Barker Pass or Tahoe city area. Using the Desolation Wilderness as a starting point. Enter Desolation exit into Mammoth. Free permit. All you need is the entrance one, and that might cover everything between with one permit. I know if you Self Register (for example) in the Hoover Wilderness near Sonora pass that permit could take you to Kennedy Meadows without worry of other permits.
