I have a few questions for you like how much weight would you ask him to carry and the $2 is that with paying all expenses on the AT for the sherpa to hike too or does the sherpa need to pays for hiking the trail too.
boy who wanders
Very Fine questions indeed! The $2 in question would be a flat rate(on all terrain)Of course there would be some gratuities along the way, but of course I would have to disseminate that as we hiked. In as far as the weight is concerned, we would have to make it clear that the weight would be at least 30 lbs. and at the most 40lbs and the waiver that this Sherpa would sign would conclude that he or she is capable to handle the weight in question. please feel free to ask any more questions on this matter.

best case scenario : $6 per hr
worst case: nada (zero days)or $2 per hr
“sherpa’s” own trip still costs at least $1 per mile, not including having to carry his or her own gear.
What about setting up - breaking camp, cooking, etc…?
You’ve GOT to be kidding and I am one gullible hiker woman to even consider posting this!

Mr. Rich, I think your question makes a lot of sense. However, you should be willing to pay a LOT more.
For example, the sherpa would have to carry their own equipment plus yours, so they could only carry about 20 lbs of your stuff. They might average 2 miles per hour, and at $50 per hour, that comes to $25 per mile.
I doubt you can find a person who could carry all of your stuff, but you might find some young, strong go-lite hiker who could carry 20 lbs for you. That would make your load seem like nothing.
For the 2000 miles of the AT, it would only cost you $50K, which is not that much for a 6-month vacation.
Look at it this way. You have money, but not enough strength. Some young guy has plenty of strength, but not enough money. A perfect match. Maybe they will even make a movie about it.

i’ll lug 30lbs of your crap. gimme 2 G’s up front & 4 when we finish.
oh and all the food and beer i can consume.:cheers

I would do it for 6 dolars a mile. no more than 18 miles a day at a 2.5 mph pace. no more than 25lbs of your gear. and you can keep your gratuities. I would have to be paid every friday, and i would do it all with a smile
manfire
I would do it for free just to have the honor of hiking with you. As for your request to not get flamed :HYOH??? sounds like advice you could use. Why not hike your own hike with your own crap. Hell, you could pay Warren some money and do they’re slack pack of the trail. That’s not a bad idea…

Obviously, most of you fail to account for a “team” effort to carry my load, or that there are many young strong peoples, who cannot afford to hike the trail and I am giving a oppurtunity for those who are less fourtunate. like I was when I was young.

jimminy grasshoppers. hilarious. but, i’ll do it. hell i’ll even put you on my back if you want… you know… you can just chill up there and drink some tea… i wouldn’t mind one bit. AND… i’ll accept 2 dollars a mile… but, expect me to do a lot of back tracking… i’ll do 30 miles a day… but we’ll only be 15 miles up the trail… but hey… you say 2 dollars a mile… i’m gonna carry you and your gear many many many miles… i hope you don’t have any more plans for the rest of your life… get ready to do some miles partner. here we come AT, IAT, C2C, CDT, PCT, LT, DT, FT, CT, M2C… looks like i’ve got a career… yippee

Ritchie… There are many Sherpa who would love to porter your load, wake you in the morn, cook your meals, go ahead and set-up your camp at your direction, whatever you may ask. You can hire a Sherpa for about $20U.S. a day, maybe even 2 for $30U.S. However, you’ll have to fly him in from Tibet, Nepal, India or another place where Sherpa live… Sherpa is not a job or title… It is an ethnic class and a familly. All Sherpa share the last name “Sherpa” and in that way are all familly. Be more mindfull of your words.

Excuse Dear Sir, for I used the Gentle name of “Sherpa” to quickly circumvent any other term for my proposal. With no disrespect intended.

ok–i’m not judging you, even though i’d reeeeally like to. but, i have first hand experience of the cruelty and judgment you’ll meet on the trail if you pull this off. i’d include a temporary confidentiality clause in whatever contract you end up with. the last thing you want is to be on the hotel room floor, bleeding from the feet, and being ridiculed by every hippy and their dog for having to hire a tour guide to carry your own damn toilet paper. speaking of, you will still wipe your own ass, right?

Mr. Rich, I think your idea makes sense.
I play a lot of golf and I always walk and carry my clubs. If one of my playing partners hires a caddy because he doesn’t have the strength and stamina to carry his clubs, that would be OK with me.
I think it is perfectly OK for you to hire a caddy to carry some of your equipment when you hike.
If you are serious about this, then decide what you will pay and post your offer on this DG and others. Along with the derisive responses, I bet you will find someone to help you.

…too funny. I can’t help but laugh this entire time. I love that someone is getting away with a good joke. Okay, okay…so maybe it’s a REAL post, but I just don’t buy it. “Ritchie Rich” (haha, even the name is great)…if you really are serious about this, then best of luck. Anyone who would judge you on or off the trail is unfortunate. Unfortunate to be wasting their mental energy on judging another person for doing something the way he wants to without hurting or creating a hassle for another person. A person who agrees to carry a load for an agreed upon price is not being hassled and not a victim; they are a business partner.
If, however, this is a joke as I suspect, well done. You managed to get some good reactions (laughs included) without any inappropriate behavior. Thank you.
