I’m new at hiking and live fairly close to the PCT. I want to connect with other experienced hikers that wouldn’t mind showing me the ropes.

Hello justagirl, while hiking you will no doubt meet a lot of cool, and decent folk. Unfortunately you may run into someone whom would take advantage of you. It may not be a good ideal to let everyone know that you are a girl hiking alone, especially where, and when you plan on hiking. Please use a little caution when planning your hike. Just a thought.

…find out, via Trail Journals, when most of the PCT crowd is around your trail area, and hike amongst. You become one of them very shortly, and the trust solidifies after days. Many hiking clubs do the week long stint also. Take a hike…

Keep in mind thru hikers are a very minute segment of the number of folks who hike on the PCT.

What section are you near? Even the remote High Sierra sections have large numbers of folks out there on any given summer day.

For example, the past 2 summers I spent an afternon west of Tyndall Creek in sight of the PCT / JMT south of Forrester. There must have been at least one group throgh there on the PCT every hour.

YOU ARE IN LUCK!!! Now that that winter is on the way. You can get a great start by reading everything you can get your hands on regarding hiking and backpacking. You can get a lot of information online and at the library. Start taking some short hikes in the low country and ask questions here and on other sites. You will get enough info to get started and then folks on the trail will always share info with you. Check out the outfitters for info on group hikes and programs being held. Be safe.

If there are Sierra Club hikes in your area, you can day hike with them. You’ll learn the trails and meet people you might like to hike with outside of the scheduled hikes.
