New Hurricane Mountain Shelter

In my 2004 journal I mention passing the prepared site for this new shelter, and the next morning after spending the night in Troutdale Virginia at the Baptist Church hostel, I mention talking to the truck driver at the trailhead with a load of materials for the shelter. This was May 12, I think. Does anyone know if the shelter was completed? Anyone have have a picture of the shelter? Anyone have a story of staying there? So many shelters are just “there” but I as a hiker have no knowledge of the preparation and construction. I am continuing north each year, hiking about 200 miles each section, and don’t know when/if I will get back to this area to see it. I would appreciate any stories, and especailly pictures, of this shelter. Thanks in advance. CBiscuit

Thanks, lone wolf. Great to hear that the shelter is finished. I’m still interested in knowing more about the shelter, such as how many it sleeps, one story or more, does it have an overhang out front, picnic table, how far to the water source, does it have a privy, tent sites around it, bear cables, fire pit - any of that info would be great. Also, most interested in a picture if anyone has one. Thanks. CBiscuit

1 story, sleeps 8-10, has an overhang and picnic table, has a composting privy, no tenting around it cuz the ground is sloped, about 75 yards to water source which is a creek, fire pit

Hurrican Moutain Shelter is great. I passed it on my thru-hike this year, only 2 weeks after it was completed. Its in a real nice area, sleeps at least 8. When I was there the privy was still being worked on. I’m not sure if the privy has a roof or not, it only had a plywood blind when I was there.
