New Jersey/New York Map

I’m looking to find the ATC’s New Jersey/New York maps. Actually all I really need is the profile but the topo part would be nice too. The ATC website is all out of them. I wasn’t able to get them last year for my thru-hike but I’ve spent so much money on them anyone, I’d like to complete the set. If anyone is willing to sell me there’s, send me an email with the map’s condition and price. Thank you.

you sure you want the maps from such a joyous portion of our trek?

haha, it reminds me of the wars we went through. i agree, it wasn’t a pleasant portion, but I’d like the profiles for my records. How are things going by the way?

I agree…not my favorite memories from drought year 02, BUT you’ll never believe, you’re in luck!

I have an extra set of NY/NJ, cause a friend borrowed one and lost it and replaced the whole set, though I only needed the one. Having said that, it is missing Map #2 which covers from the Taconic to the Hudson (because I want a complete set too). In fact the whole reason he ended up with my copy is cause I skipped 17 miles on my thru-hike cause things were SO bad, but I went down after I finished and did the miles that Fall and ran into this friend who had flipped and was about to finish.

They’re yours for free if you want them, sorry they’re not quite complete? Email me and I’ll send them out. Glad I saved them now, just couldn’t throw out maps, even from this area!

Actually I liked NJ - it was way more scenic and full of wildlife. I have no love for NY, variety of reasons for me, all personal to my hike. It’s where I had a 3 day meltdown as I call it, it was hot, like you wouldn’t believe hot, and therefore no water, anywhere. We dragged ourselves to deli’s to get in out of the heat and hydrate. It’s way too close to the city and I had an unfortunate encounter on the Bear Mt road (trail follows road, although finally the ATC is relocating this, see article in recent Journeys, going to be a long project) with a creepy guy which just put me over the edge. You’re just always around traffic or the sounds of traffic and busy roads - the worst road crossing is the Palisades Interstate Parkway which you have to run across two lanes twice (southbound and then northbound).

The biggest problem for me that summer was the heat and the lack of water, which causes other issues like horrible chafing (yes, in women too).

Well, I’ve got to say it. I enjoyed this stretch, both NY and NJ, despite the crazy hot and humid weather in '02. We had fun, just being able to pop off trail to hit a hotdog stand or a deli, lounge around and get a fizzy drink. It was a novelty, and I thought the trail was interesting, too. I loved the long, weathered, exposed rock stretches, despite the heat, and the Lomon Squeezer was a highlight, simply because of all the laughing we did there.

That said, Lake Tiarati on July 4th was insane, and I don’t recommend going anywhere near it! Major mistake, but it was hilarious to see how the throngs of city folks looked at us - 5 thruhikers cooking dinner at a table, all with our little alcohol stoves!! They obviously thought we’d recently dropped in from outer space. On one hand it was awful, but on the other it’s a great memory.
