New Pack Ideas - Appalachian Trail

Due to some issues with shoulder straps, I have recently decided to replace my old ULA pack with a newer pack. Seeing as how I have not bought a pack in quite some time, I need some advice on the best models.

I am looking for a pack that is big enough for week-long jaunts, but will still be flexible enough for 2-3 day trips. Somewhere in the 4000 cubic inch range would be good. Most of my hiking is done on the AT, with a few other notable trails.

Any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

I love my Osprey Cresent 110, but its very big.

A Osprey Aether’s would be a good choice.

L.L Bean makes a pack called the white mountain pack. Its really flexible. The straps are really adjustable and the regular sized pack ranges from (i think) 4000 cu to 5500 cu. I will post the link in a few.

Check out the Six Moon Designs Starlight pack. It has an outside pocket for your sleeping pad and the shoulder straps adjust up and down so you can get a perfect fit. You can also order it with whatever length hip belt you need and with or without hip belt pockets.

Trekking Trav, you mention an old ULA. Have you looked at ULA recently? I just broke in a new ULA Catalyst last year, including a two-week trek on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT). It’s 43 oz w/4600 cu in storage. I have 3 other buddies who have this pack & we all love it. (One of the guys dropped weight/size to the Circuit - see also ULA’s Conduit.)

SMD is junk. Check out Mountain Laurel Designs. My zip got me half of the PCT all of the AZT all of the TYT and all of the Hi FI Route. 2,700 miles and it will do 3 times more. Killer price for handmade equipment here in the US (Virginia to be exact). And way lighter than any of the Junk SMD is spewing out.
