Theres a several page excert from it on the link you posted From Amazon.com, and after reading i conclude he does not like the PCT nor does he like his relation with his girl friend. Once I find it at the library or used book store I will read it however being a book worm. Maybe he read the intro pages to the guidebooks sections a little over zealously.

I enjoyed reading it. It took a while to figure out what year he hiked and whether or not he completed it as a thru or not. Good storytelling, funny adventures, nice to read about when you can’t actually be there in person. I got it at the bookstore, read it in one day, then passed it on to another PCT 09 hopeful.

I read and enjoyed The Cactus Eaters and I do not agree that Dan White dislikes the PCT. I do agree that he was a pretty lousy boy friend back then, but hey, let’s not open that can of worms (lots of us have probably resembled that remark!). I think it was interesting to read a story about the PCT before the intensive use of the internet and before the organized trail angels. Nowadays we don’t really have any excuse for being unprepared or for lacking water or resupplies or for relying on dumb luck. Ten to fifteen years ago the trail was no doubt a very different experience. In my opinion, Mr. White is a very skilled storyteller with a great sense of humor.
