New Shelter in GA to replace Gooch Gap?

Just was reading the ALDHA companion for the AT and it makes reference to the fact that the Gooch Gap shelter was to be torn down and a new shelter put in 1.5 miles south this last year.

Anyone up to date on the status of this change?

Yes, there is a new shelter about a mile south of the old Gooch Gap Shelter. I’m not sure if they’ve torn down the old shelter yet, but the new one came on line in September, as I recall.

It’s a jam up nice job too. The GATC and their members and partners in this project are to be commended. The shelter is first class with a covered cooking area and an excellent spring. Get water here, you’ll be glad you did. It tastes like it did out of my Grandma’s well about 50 years ago!

This relocation will allow hikers an extra one trail mile between this shelter and the AT intersection with Cooper Gap Road (USFS 42) instead of the two tenths of a mile from the old shelter, not to mention a thousand times better water source!
