New Tellico Gap Hostel

I read in several journals about a nice new hostel at Tellico Gap. I planned on looking in EasyHikers journals to get the info but he deleted all his early journal entries. I’m making last minute preparations and would like to find out more about this hostel before I leave. It’s only a few hundred yards from the trail.

Don’t know if it is the place you mean or not but there is a guy named Ron Vaughn who opens his house up during hiker season and folks show up to spend the night. If I remember right. It was around $20 for a bunk, shower, lasagna diner and drink. He also had other goodies on hand. My stay there was great and the place was packed with hikers. You should find postings when you approach the road crossing. Good luck

A-train here, Easyhikers transcriber. If i remember correctly Easy said it was 30 bucks a night, at that guy Rons house. Supposedly ron has hiked a lot of trails including the AT and is a good host. Easyhiker said he got as mmuch free internet time as he wanted, which is always a plus. hope this helps

Do you happen to know what road it’s off of. I can’t find anything in the 2001 Wingfoot Handbook about Tellico Gap and couldn’t find it on my map. Also a phone# would be appreciated if anyone has it. Thanks!

…on the trail, so you’ll know. It’s the gravel road before the climb up wesser. I don’t think you need a worry about finding it and a phone# seems rather unneccessary. If you’re looking to send a drop remember that NOCis only 11 m. north.

Phone # is (828) 321-4082 but be aware that it is only open Feb 1-April 20. After that Ron is away hiking.

That’s too bad Tellico Gap Hostel will be closed when I go through in early May. That sounded like a great place. I just checked Wingfoot’s 2001 Thru-Hiker’s handbook and now noticed that the Blueberry Patch will also be closed and I was also hoping to stop there :frowning:

Oh well … getting ready to head out to Springer Mtn. on Wednesday and really looking forward to the hike.

I was confused about the Tellico Gap hostel, too, last year, because Tellico Gap wasn’t in WF’s book. It’s about 8 miles before NOC… you will definitely see signs before you get there. I loved staying at Ron’s because I had been sleeping in the snow for a week before that, and it was fun to hear lots of trail stories there.

The Blueberry Patch is overrated because it’s the first hostel, and people don’t know what to expect. The uber-christianity there gave me the creeps. If you are going into Hiawassee and can afford it, spring for the Holiday Inn Express for $60, with a pool, hot tub, free juice all day long, right next to the grocery, two sinks. It was great!

This hostel is CLOSED! It never was a hostel. This is a private home. Best wishes on your hikes.

Tellico Gap Hiker Hostel – CLOSED

FYI – I found out my brother has been running a hiker hostel from my private summer home at Tellico Gap, NC. Please do not plan on staying there or entering the property. My brother is no longer a guest in my home and the sheriff will be patrolling and arresting trespassers.

Please plan your hike accordingly. The NOC is just a few miles ahead.

I appreciate your respect of my private home.

Have a great hike in the Nantahalas.
