I will share as soon as I find out more. Cibola county has instituted a level II restriction which says no fires including stoves, ditto Luna county. Saw a satellite image which showed smoke in the gila and east of Deming. Apparently North of Silver City had a fire in March. So it is wise to be prepared and be creative.

I plan to stop in Grants on my way out from VT to check in with the forest service to get the skinny. Clarification: apparently fires are permitted in developed campgrounds in fire rings. PB&J here we come.

See nmfireinfo.com for NM-related fire news. They’re also on Twitter, so it’s possible to get updates on the trail via SMS text messages or a smart phone app or browser.

If there are indeed stove restrictions, it is A good year to go no-stove it seems. That much less to worry about. You can always pick up a stove again in Chama for Colorado if a hiker wants a hot meal for the higher and cooler elevations.
Sans Stove
just spoke with Bob a firefighter in NM and he says that hikers should be oK with their stoves but obviously to be veryyyyy careful. No fires currently along the CDT in NM.
