Hi all, I’m in the process of planning for a July departure date NOBO thru-hike. I Just called Vermont Transit lines and found that “We no longer service Newport(the closest town with bus service to North Troy, the northern LT terminus)…and neither does anyone else”! The closest bus service is 63 miles west in St Albans. I called North Country Taxi, the only cab service around there, andwas quoted $120.00 to get to St Albans…Ouch. Any suggestions?

(2) post a message to AT-L asking if anyone who lives in the area would like to help you out. There is a lot of traffic on AT-L, and AT people know about the LT. I don’t subscribe to AT-L, but people frequently post messages like this on PCT-L.
It’s all in the way you word things. Goof (AT’00, PCT’02, CDT’04) taught me how to ask for help. Instead of saying “Could you give me a ride”, he would say “I’m hiking the CDT from Canada to Mexico, I’m out of food, and I need to get into (whatever town) to resupply. Would you be willing to help out a hiker?” ---- Wording his request this way, Goof allowed the other person to all of a sudden become an angel, someone who chose to help. Worked every time.

Yogi, that is so true. It took me awhile to get the knack but once I did so many MORE people were willing to help me out.
Good advice to check out some of the other forums, a lot of VT hikers out there were willing to help me when I needed a lift to the north end. Sue/HH

I used the exact technigue to get a free ride to ST Albans, from North troy, where I got on AMtrak. I went into the local store, then the snack bar. Great Burgers by the way. All the restaurants in North Troy are closed on Tuesday. Anyway I would simply ask how far is St ALbans from here, what type of town is it. At the snack bar the woman asked why the interest. I said I was going to Amtrak staion and she offered me ride instantly. Her partner was going there the next day for a medical appointment. I did convince her to take ten dollars toward gas. The first train comes thru about 930 or so.
