Anyone use on of these on the trail? does it work in the back country? thanks

Too much weight at however many ounces.
AAlso, part of the hiking adventure, for me, is accepting whatever the trail offers, including weather. I watch the sky, try to figure out what weather is coming and think how I will deal with what I am guessing will arrive.
I also tell myself that whatever conditions I am currently enjoying, existing with, frustrated with or hating, that condition will not last forever.
I know that AT 2003 couldn’t have been more that 40 days and 40 nights of rain even though it seemed like it!
YMMV

We used one on our hike and glad we had it. It worked well all the way. It helped keep us out of the snow storms. Purchased it from Campmor, small fit in my shirt pocket. Kept it in a z-lock. Many others wanted to hear the weather.
I’m not an ounce counter and we still carry it when we hike.

My wife and I thru-hiked last year and loved our access to NOAA weather. It was invaluble. We got one of those white and orange Sony Walkman SRF-M80V. It recieved tv sound (obviously no picture, but the sound to the programs) which allowed us access to local news, football games, etc. It also had a weather band which we got reception on almost all the time, via one channel or another. Everybody liked it a ton and many of the hikers that borrowed it for a night bought one at the next town. It is a touch expensive, but worth every bit. I listened to it in the rain also (it is water resistant)…until we got back to civilization and my wife dropped it in the toilet…

comments. A wx radio was my ‘luxury’ item. My AM/FM
jogger radio just didn’t cut it when it counted. So I bought
the Campmor wx radio and it worked/works well, although
it’s 3Xs heavier(6ozs.). (Now they have MP3 players with a
radio and voice recorder that weigh next to nothing.)
Everyone was always interested in what was in store for
tomorrow. And the severe weather alerts were useful too.

I have 2 Cobra FRS walkie talkies that have weather radios built in. They were very useful on my last hike as I was the group leader and every students had a walkie talkie. They helped us keep in contact and gave us the bad weather reports at the same time. If you cannot read the weather signs, they are definitely worth considering.

I hiked last Feb through GA-NC snd was glad I carrried my Radio Shak weather radio. It waarned me of several severe winter storms and rapid weather changes. I don’t carry it in the warm months though.
