NOAA weather radio

I’m curious to hear thoughts regarding carring a NOAA weather radio on the AT. Sure it’s an extra 6 or so ounces, but is it worth the weight? During my hike from Springer to Pearisburg in '98 – and on various other section hikes before and since – there were times I left the relative safety of a shelter, only to get caught in a nasty thunderstorm within an hour of hiking. Had I known a storm was on its way, I would have extended my stay at the shelter until the storm passed. Would a NOAA radio have alerted me to an approaching storm? Do these things work in the mountains?

I have an Oregon Scientific Weather Radio and it works great - it takes AA batteries and weighs about a half pound or so. It has two digital clock alarms and can be set to turn on automatically when weather warnings/alerts are sent. Check out the NOAA weather website to get an idea of coverage. The broadcasts are NOT just for coastal weather. I get good reception on the Long Trail in VT.

I don’t know the exact model but i have a small 3oz sony am/fm/wx/tv radio. i use ear buds with mine to keep the weight down. the wx and tv (good for local weather reports)work pretty well but can be very spotty in some locations.
it takes 1 aaa battery and lasts a long time.
i got mine at walmart on the trail for about $30.
