Welll…beginning to look like I may have to become a NOBO (technically a NEBO I guess) due to the fires. Back to the forums & Journals to start getting ideas for a quick reversal.

8th is still two weeks away so I think you have time. I’d think things should clear up by then since the fire isn’t actually on the CT. I have three plans of attack. One where I start at section 3, one where I do a NOBO and my hoped for plan to do a SOBO. I’ll wait to mail my food drops till I get to Denver and have a better idea of the existing fires and any that develop. In the meantime, I’m reading journals on both directions.

Wait and see is all you can do.

The fire in the San Juans is looking troublesome (under statement!!!) BUT, the fire near Waterton Canyon is looking to be under control.

Monitor the CTF facebook page for the latest fire info.

Even if you are not on Facebook, you can still see the updates.

I should add Waterton is stil closed, but that could change. Again, look at the Facebook page for updates.

I drove from Lake City to Creede today and the smoke was very thick on the CT in the early afternoon. It was so bad that it would have been very difficult to continue hiking. The fire is probably close to 8 or 9 miles from the CT in that area. However, the winds are blowing from the SW and taking the smoke to the NE and onto the CT in Segments 21 and the east end of Section 22. There is a very active northern flank of the fire which could move closer to the CT over the next week and there is lots of beetle kill waiting to burn. SJ Ron

Waterton Canyon is open, as well as the rest of segments 1-3 according to the CTF Facebook page and the Waterton Canyon page.
