North Carolina AT in December

Folks,

Does anyone out there know about the weather trend for the the North Carolina parts of the trail in December? My Scoutmaster is planning an older boy scout hiking trip during that month on the AT. We are thinking about the area north of Hot Springs and south of Spivey Gap. Not sure about the exact parts of the trail.

Any information or ideas on this would be appreciated.

It gets cold but not unbearable. You would need warm bags and clothing but it is achievable.

December can be absolutely delightful in NC but if a cold front comes through pushing a lot of moisture it can get real nasty in a hurry in the mountains. Hope for nice weather but absolutely be prepared for cold rain/snow with strong winds. Nighttime temps could be anywhere from low 20s to upper 40s.

Hi.The above post is correct. Bring lots of layers. I visit friends from the Triangle area at the end of Dec & start of Jan & we often go hiking. It surprises me how often, despite being in the South; really I lots of layers & a winter coat. Probably 2 or 3 yrs ago when I was there at the start of Jan; it snowed 10 inches. Everything was shut down (including my flight out!). Sat in the airport 16 hrs. Lovely…not!
