North Florida Weather

In the thread on where to live, Mountain Man stated that it is hot in Florida for 365 days out of the year. That might be true of South Florida, below Orlando, but it’s not true of North Florida.

For the benefit of anyone considering a hike in North Florida, it does get cold here. I have lived as far south as Gainesville, and I can remember walking to class at UF and seeing a girl slip and fall on the sidewalk, because the sprinkler pipes had busted and the water froze on the concrete. No, it doesn’t get as cold for as long as it does up north, but from late November through February the temperature regularly drops below freezing. The usual pattern is that we have about 3-4 days of it dropping to the low-30s/high-20s at night, and warming to the 60s during the day. Then it becomes overcast, warms up a little, and rains. Then it gets cold again. In the transition from rainy to cold, we sometimes have days when it doesn’t get out of the 40s, and the wind chill makes it feel like it’s in the 30s. There are also days when it’s rainy, and the temperature stays in the 50s all day. We also get cold snaps where it drops into the low-20s/high-teens. I can only remember it getting into single digits once.

The one type of weather that you can almost (but not quite) rule out is snow. In my 43 yrs of living here, I’ve seen it snow about five times, and never enough to build a decent sized snowman. So, you can leave the snowshoes at home, but if you come to hike in North Florida in winter, please be prepared for cold weather.

we continually average 30 degree days here in Jacksonville in Jen/Feb. It can be down right cold. We also get frost.

During our FL trail hike last year it was COLD COLD COLD in the panhandle. We had a guy come over from Maine to join us for a few days. He almost froze to death his first night when it dropped into the low 20’s. He just was not prepared for that kind of weather in FL and did not bring his warmer gear.

Don’t be fooled. Even if the day warms up, it can be cold once the sun drops.:girl
