North Kaibab Update

I just completed sections 39 to 43, from the north rim of the Grand Canyon to the Utah border.

Section 39. No trail issues. Water at the North Kaibab TH. The guide book says its .02 miles from the gate near the north entrance fee station to the trail heading NE to the park boundry but I think its more like 1.2 miles to that trail intersection.

Passage 40 is a very scenic route through some great subalpine parks and views of Marble Canyon. Water was flowing at Crystal spring, Dog Lake was 3/4 full, Crane Lake was 1/4 full. The Trail is closed from Crane Lake to FR 205 in Section 41 because of a fire in 2006.

Section 41, the trail is closed NoBo from the TH to FR 205 however the trail follows very closely to HWY 67. Tent catipllars are everywhere in the new aspen growth. From FR 205, no problems. The trail is well marked. Ridge Tank was 3/4 full. Big Ridge Tank was empty.

Section 42. There is 8.5 gallons in water jugs near the gate on North side of HWY 89A (THANKS Dan!!!). I packed off the empty jugs. No problems with trail.

Section 43. There is 4.5 gallons in water jugs just north of AZT marker (Thanks again Dan!!!). The trail is in good shape.

Utah Border. Great campground with options to hike to the “Wave” (permit required) and Buckskin Gulch to Paria Canyon.

All in all, very scenic hiking in my opinion…

Hope this helps.
