Fire Devastates Kennedy Meadows

Kennedy Meadows, CA – Fire has completely destroyed the majority of the facilities at Kennedy Meadows.

County Fire Inspector Craig Hart reports the total destruction includes the main lodge, seven cabins, the residence cabin, one laundry house, one generator shed with three eight kilowatt generators, one public restroom, one shower house, a water heater house, a tool shed, a storage shed, one car and one truck. Two travel trailers were damaged.

Undamaged structures include the Manager’s house, several employee housing units and the bar.

The initial report has the ignition point of the fire in the kitchen or fireplace of the main lodge.

To ALL 2008 PCT hikers - be aware that they might not accept packages, have a store, and/or have a restaurant for the 2008 season. It does however, sound like the bar is ok!

The other option for Sonora Pass (which I did in '06) was to hitch down into Bridgeport.

While the lodging is on the spendy side, Bridgeport is quite a nice, compact, full service town, with everything a hiker could need (laundry, plenty of motels, a small grocery store, Heet, etc).

This is a viable alternate to the Norther KM.

It took a while to get a ride into town (traffic was 3 to 1 heading west vs. east - but it was July 5th), but I finally scored a ride.

Northern KM Pack Station and Resort was not only a wonderful resupply for PCT thru-hikers but a wonderful place where generations of family experienced a bit of wilderness for many years.
This was a very memorable overnight resupply on July 1st last year for me! I for one, do hope that KM Pack Station is rebuilt for future generations to enjoy.
