Northern states

I read that someone mentioned hammocking in the Northern States can be burdensome. Is there any truth to this? It seems like no matter where you are, surely two trees are present which can be utilized for a hammock set-up. Lemme know. Thanks, dwgtrkkr

Lets just say it will take a little more effort to find those two trees. Of coarse you know the futher north you get the smaller the trees. And those you can use might just be in moose bog. Some spots in NH (I’m from they-uh) are nothing but fir and so tightly packed you can’t even see the trunks. Sunny spots away from the bugs are usually treeless.

I used the Henesey Ultralight Asym and it was great with a couple of minor gripes. I would reccomend a larger tarp if you plan on cooking under it rather than near shelters. You also need to deal with the heat loss under the hammock.I used a 24 inch blue foam pad from REI. You should also use the snake skins. I slept in a micro fleece with a sleeping bag over me like a quilt and I was comfortable down into the thirties. Test your comfort level before leaving for Springer. It is really a comfortable nights sleep.

Thanks Yo-yo. I was beginning to wonder if I had made the right choice. I know that there are trees in the lower 12 and a half states of the AT, but Northern NH and ME were an unknown facto. I did see the pictures of trees so I hoped to find some to hang out in on the AT. Perhaps above the timber line I might have a problem. We shall see. With a Clark or a Speer Hammock there is the possibility of setting up on the ground as there is top entry and hiking poles can be used to hold the ends up (like a tent). The HH has bottom entry so it may prove more of a problem.
