Northern terminus parking and shuttle?

Thinking of starting a thru-hike from the northern terminus of the LT. I’ll be starting with and transported by a friend who only is interested in hiking the first 100 miles or so- after that we’ll part company.
I can arrange for a southern pick up for myself, but we’re curious about where there would be a secure location to leave the car, as well as a shuttle to Journey’s End Trail. Also, any hints on how best for my buddy to be transported back to his car after he’s through with his 100 mile (+ or -) portion? Thanks.

Call the Green Mountain Club. There is an Inn not to far from the Norther Terminus that provides the services you are asking about. I just cannot remember the name.

Rose Apple will also let guests park for $1 a day.

The North Troy Inn has a similar deal for guests but they ask you make arrangements. 802 988-2527

100 miles is around Appalachian Gap, an easy 7 mile hitch east to Waitsfield. The nearest bus station is in Montpellier 20 miles north on VT Rt 100. I’ve done the App Gap to Montpellier hitch and found it fairly easy. You could also get to Montpellier from Jonesville, about 25 miles north of App Gap. Jonesville is on Interstate 89 (no highway ramps unfortunetly) and Montpellier is south east on the Interstate (not sure how far). Vermont Transit Bus lines goes north to Newport and the Rose Apple Acre Farm will pick you up at the bus station.

You could also try a local hiker shuttler: Andy and Carlene Squires of Richmond will shuttle between Lincoln Gap and Journey’s End. 802 434-2533

I’d like to thank the GMC’s End-To-Ender’s Guide for all this info. I hope it all up to date.

Celt,
Where can I get a copy of that? I’m think I’m finally committing to doing Sherburne Pass==>Canada latter part of Sept. I have the trail guide, although unfortunately I bought it last Feb before the latest and I hear, greatly improved, edition. :frowning:

Yes, just what Little Bear said. I’m sure they still have copies but if not I’ll mail you mine. I only bought the 2003 ed so I could be a know-it-all on trail forums. :lol

I’ve been to the GMC website, I was just wondering if there was another source, I don’t know why I really asked the question, maybe I just wanted to see my name in print!!
Time to pay UPS I guess…I hate to buy another guide too, what do you folks think? Should I suck it up and get the 2003 one-is it that much bett-ah?

I thought you were talking about the GMC’s town guide (End-to-Ender’s Guide). The new guide has some nice improvements (the route descriptions havn’t changed much). It has all the 1999 relocations, the new shelter on the Pico Relo and the rescent relo that eliminated the road walk up over Smugglers Notch. The maps and mileage summaries for each division are now at the beginning of each division chapter instead of clustered together at the end of the book. I was always annoyed by all that page flipping, this new layout should help. The maps are now in color and there is a elevation profile for each too. I think its greatly improved.

Since we are on this topic, does anyone know of a good way to hike from Baxter to the Long Trail? I am thinking of hiking to the LT south after I finish my AT hike. Any help will be great. What trails connect with the Long Trail in Canada?

Man, that’s a hard one. My buddy 2x4 who should be finishing next Weds. the 17th is also going to do the LT south, but he’s not planning on walking there!! I’ll be interested if anyone has any ideas.

I went to the Canaian Trails site and seems you can hike into Canada VIA the IAT and connect with the Transcanadian trail which seems to pass just north of the long trail via spur trails. I jsut wonder if there is a connecting trail from there. Thanks Blueberrie for the comment. I will keep on searching. Let you know if something comes up.
