November on the Trail

Hey everyone-
No I have hiked the south half of the trail, but I am just looking for a any suggestions that you guys might have for an easy 6 day trip in GA, NC, or TN. I will be taking a couple friends (new hikers) over the week of Thanksgiving. What are your thoughts… I was thinking maybe Erwin to Hampton, being sure to hit a good hostel at each end- that is if they are open. Well, let me know what you think. Thanks

Oh yeah I almost forgot- What is the weather like in this area in November? I went through there in Febuary last year so it cant be too much worse.

Peace

Boy…you didn’t stop by. NO SOUP FOR YOU! What’s the weather like? Look for your missing toes. Okay, chilly. Do Erwin and get Janet to run you up or down trail.

Rocket, wear some blaze orange…so you won’t get shot by a hunter. You might get hit by a cold front and experience some chilly temperatures, and you could but probably won’t get hit by any snow. Regards from Pearisburg

Hey BW-
Good to hear that you are still helping hikers out. Sorry that I did not get a chance to stop by- my days were limited and I had to visit someone one more time before he headed for the Peace Corp… but I still hope that one day I paths will cross. Did you get my card? If not, let me know. Anyhow, I didnt loose any toes, but my friend Bono might have lost something a little more useful (at least in the ‘real’ world), his mind. What has gotten into that kid? I have not heard from him at all and his site hasnt been updated in ages. Anyhow, if you hear from him, please let me know.
Well, I am pretty sure that I am going to do the Erwin to Hampton stretch… Miss Janet, I dont know if you ever read this stuff, but if you do, I hope that I can stop by your place (though I cant get stuck as long as I did last time). Well keep the tips comin and your feet movin!

Peace

I was on the the trail last November. I hiked from Springer to Bland VA from Sept. 18 to Nov. 18 this last year. Bland to Katahdin from late May to August 28 this summer.
November is chilly up in the Virginia and Tennessee Mountains in the fall. I would guess that you will run into temperatures falling into the teens at night and some pretty cold days. Also, the landscape looks dead. However, you will have some incredible experiences for solitude. Don’t plan on doing big miles because you do not have much day light.
On another note, I would recommend to anyone on this list hiking in the Dolly Sods in West Virginia. It is a wilderness area that looks like the tundra of Alaska. It looks a bit like the Grayson Highlands. There are windswept pines and aspen trees in patches. Absolutely stunning.
Namaste,

We got it. What’s a Bono? Tie one leg behind your back or you’ll leave those friends in the dust. Should be frosty, take some warm food and make sure your bros are up on gear and technique, no cold hikers. Have fun.

Rocket,
Erwin to Kincorra or Hampton is a sweet section, but I thought i’d recommend hot springs to erwin. It’ll probably be a good bit easier than the other section. You’re still sandwhiched between two great trail towns and you can start or end with miss janet. You can do this rather easily over 6 days since its only 68 miles or more strenously over 5 days. I just recall the section north of Erwin being rather tough with lots of little straight ups and downs even after 300+ miles behind me, but the section outta hot springs didn’t strike me as very hard. The only big mountain is big bald, but its so gradual going up there. Just thought i’d throw my two cents in, condidering the people you’ll be hiking with.
