Now hiking the entire trail

After some additional thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion that it would be great to hike the entire trail instead of just a part of it.

I was wondering if anyone else is planning to start their hike from mid-july to mid-august. I’m very flexible with my start time. I’ve hiked all of the AT but have not done hardly any hiking out here in the west. I don’t mind hiking alone but was wondering if anyone or if any groups were starting out during that time period and would not mind a 40 something, pretty low maintance and laid back guy tagging along. I usually 1/2 way know what I’m doing out on the trail and I’m a medium but steady hiker. On the AT I seemed to pass others going up hill and then I’d see the same individuals pass me on the downhill side.

If anyone has any info I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Scott

I am real interested in doing this hike. Fairly flexible on start and stop dates. 43 year old with most of my experience in Texas (Big Bend & Guadalupe NP)

Hi Mraymax,

I found out that I will be in LA on Sunday, July 10th. I thought I would head up to Yosmite the next day and then start the hike on either the 12th or 13th. Now I have to figure out how to get back up there after finishing the hike at the south end.

I appreciate you writing back.

I will be hiking the JMT starting July 15 and going halfway to Vermilion/Edison Lake. Then in early or mid August I will be finishing from Florence Lake to Whitney. (I’ve already done the loop from Edison to Florence.) I am planning to go solo as my friends are more interested in base camping than through-hiking. I do hope to join up with other JMT hikers along the way. Despite lots of experience in the High Sierra I still get spooked about the idea of solo camping in bear country. I am a really slow downhill hiker and average speed uphill hiker. I’ve had some knee and back troubles so I am definitely trying to go as light as possible. I’ve got my packweight down to around 18- 20 lbs. I will be using a Henry Shire tarptent, golite gust pack (may switch to something slightly heavier with better suspension/hipbelt) and an alcohol stove.

Hi Fiona,

Sounds as if you are pretty much set for your hike. I just ordered my Henry Shire tarptent and I’m going to try and hike with a GVP frameless pack. I’ve also switched from a whisperlite that I used on the AT to an alcohol stove.

I’m planning on trying to fish during the hike so I’m probably only going to average about 10 miles of hiking. I think I will be starting a couple of day ahead of you but with my slower than normal pace you will probably be able to catch up.

The AT had some places with bear warnings but it does not sound like the problems with bears back east is anywhere near what it is along certain places on the JMT. Hope to see you out there but if not, then have a wonderful and safe hike.

Take care,

I will be hiking the JMT 7/20 - 8/16 starting from Yosemite valley. Plan to climb some peaks along the way and do some side trips. Most of my hiking experience has been in the High Sierra and I have learned that it is too good to rush. Hope to do some hiking with some of you. Have fun everyone!
