Just curious, but have any of you past hikers noticed if NPR was receivable by radio in most areas along the AT? We like to listen in the morning whilst dozing.

Someone mentioned that the NPR was receivable on the AT, but you would have skip zones in the valleys. Most UHF/VHF frequencies are line-of-sight, so the mountains will play havoc with the reception at times. But you will have your moments of musical bliss. Enjoy the hike. Skipper & Dusty 2/26/01

I don’t know if I’d say it’s recievable most of the time…but then again, I didn’t get a walkman until Front Royal. I’ve heard that there are more NPR stations recievable in the south from some of my friends. But you can get NPR a good deal of the time. I, being a professional violinist, listeded to NPR as often as possible; which was enough to stop the cravings anyhow. I also enjoyed listening to WABC 770 AM in NY. The Conservative lineup -Dr. Laura, Rush, and Steve Hannity. Not that I could take that much talk radio ALL day long, but sometimes it help cut the effort at times. You wont have NPR all the time, but you will have it enough to appreciate it. Some of my favorite radio stations from the Front Royal north (besides NPR): The Mountain 97.5? in Charlotsville, DC 101, WABC 770, WCYY 93.9, WBLM, gee…you’d think that I could remember more. It’s only been since August.

Big Brother might not be listening, but he is sure transmitting. Only part of my hike where I thought I was living in a country with totalitarian government(laugh).I would search for music and find nothing for days on end. However, I could almost always count on picking up NPR.The voice of the people(?).I must confess I am sucker for “Lake Woebegone” especially when I was hiking in Maine.

i dunno about other area’s, but you probably wont pick up NPR in the smokies. its a low band fm with relatively low wattage and is located in Knoxville, tn at the University of Tennessee. I worked at the sister station for a while (same building, but my station was in the damn parking garage)…go figure, an extreme sports show (my baby) gets the parking garage while the (no offense) nonsensical ramblings of the NPR morning guy bill got the 3rd floor office with houseplants really pisses me off.

Along the ridge from Dennis Cove Rd. to Damascus you can pick up NPR pretty good on the AT.

When hiking in NC you may be able to pick up 88.7 WNCW. This may be the best public radio station in the US. They have a Knoxville relay, and one in Boone as well. I cant remember the dial # for them. In the Smokies you should be able to pick it up. I had no problems.
