October hike - Appalachian Trail

I plan to hike the month of Oct to hike from Bland, VA to Hot Springs. Any suggestions re: about hiking south or north? Minimum temps? Best ways to get to and from the trail? Is 300 miles in a month about right? Thanks

Last October, we had snow as far south as The Standing Indian Wilderness in North Carolina. Talking to locals around Roan Mountain, I believe that they had some signifigant accumulation.

It can definitely get cold and snowy in the higher elevations down south in October. Moreover, while long range weather forecasting techniques are not especially accurate, current long range forecasts are hinting that this Fall could get quite chilly, quite early this year in the East so, for safety sake, I would pack as if this were a winter trip. Hopefully, you get lucky and see nothing but Indian Summer out there, but better safe than sorry.
