Ok, about winter jobs

I have talked to a number of people about finding a “ski bum” job in the winter. Some people have stressed that this is not the easiest job to get, and that you really need connections…others have mentioned that it may not even be worth my while, unless room and board is included, and even after that, it still may not be worth it.

Out of the people here that have done this, what thoughts can you add to this? Is it really that hard to find a job w/ a ski resort, and do they often offer room and board?

I worked at Snowshoe Mtn for the 99-00 season. The job itself wasn’t that hard to get but it didnt include room and board. I split a two bedroom two bath w/ 3 other people and it ran about 175/mnth. Wasnt the best living conditions but it was enough. Came back to Wilmington NC for the summer b/c of the money and the boredom of living in such a desolated area. You can get a job there fairly easy. I just went up to the job fair one weekend and I was hired. Alot of fun, but I ended up maxing out one of my credit cards. I wouldnt trade any of the time I spent there. It was an absolute ball:cheers

I worked my way through college by being a lift rat at Waterville Valley ski Resort in NH. The jobs were not that hard to get and every year they had a job fair about this time of year to hire. Throughout the year people would leave and they were constantly hiring. Because the jobs were so low paying ( at least in 1979 when I last worked there) they had trouble finding and keeping emplyees. I heard that some of the resorts hire from other countries in order to get a reliable pool of employees. I was at Sunday River in Maine one year and surprised to see a number of Jamacians working there. There are also a number of jobs off mountain such as waitstaff and cooks or night auditors in hotels. I always enjoyed working the Ski Area. I got to be outside every day in the fresh air and on my days off I was in the mountains allready. Good luck in your job search.

i thru hiked in 02 then worked last year at Sunday River in Maine (not too far from Grafton Notch, and i did some great winter hikes on the AT). Job was easy to get, but they were useless at hooking me up with housing. I found a place over the phone and wound up living alone. If I’d gone up there a little earlier i would’ve been able to get a roommate and save some money. I wound up eating into my savings a bit, ($7 an hour doens’t go too far) but it was a great winter.

My advice: take a night job. People who worked days never got to ski or hike. I worked 3 to 11 doing mindless lift ticket selling and condo check ins, and i skied or hiked nearly every day all winter.

I applied online to a bunch of ski resorts. I worked at SR because they agreed to hire me over the phone. (I was living in New Jersey that fall; and didn’t feel like driving 400 miles to interview for a $7 an hour job). I didn’t even decide to do this until early December, and it still worked out OK!
