Olallie Lake hiker packages

The PCTA just got word that Olallie Lake will no longer accept packages for PCT hikers. Alternatives are to send a maildrop to Big Lake Youth Camp or hitch into the town of Sisters (grocery store).

Yeah, I hiked last year and saw that coming. Here’s one thing to remember though; OL is a beautiful place on a beautiful stretch of trail (with food and good beer!), and it’s just about 1/3 mile off the trail. So, don’t forget to plan a stop here. Sit on the stoop and admire the Mt. Jefferson wild through the quiet lens of Olallie Lake–which you (hikers!) are about to enter. Olallie means ‘huckelberry’, but it also means ‘oasis’. And, for what it’s worth, there are some beautiful trout in that lake.

Another option is to re-supply at the minimal store @ Olallie Lake… This option is for the adventurous, non-picky eater who loves a challenge & who is not on a tight budget… In other words, you could re-supply there if you HAD to.javascript:smile(’:)’)

Johnabee makes a great point - the view from the wooden chairs on the front porch is exceptional - Mt. Jefferson looming above a picture perfect lake. I caught a glorious sunset from the porch, while I ate some microwave pizza and burritos. It’s one of my favorite views on the whole trail.

Oh, and one more thing, they charge $5 for perhaps the worst shower on the trail - its a lukewarm trickle in a closet sized moldy wood shack without lights. I was forewarned of this by other hikers, but i felt i had to see for myself. (mistake) There’s a great lake right on the PCT, where you can wash up (swimming in Olallie Lake itself is prohibited - its used as drinking water).

I never saw the sense in sending a resupply box to Ollalie given that Sisters is a full service town, the hitch down was easy (back up took 75 min). Although it seems like a long way to go from Sisters to Cascade Locks (165 miles or so), it really isn’t as the terrain is fairly easy. You can use, I suppose, Timberline for something like resupply if you want to shorten the leg. I would stop in at Ollalie for a few beers, however.
