Old Rag Hike - Appalachian Trail

Hey everyone, I have been on this site for a while and decided to post for the first time. I have been reading some literature on the appalachian trail and have been setting my motion to hike it sometime in the near future, however, I just hiked Old Rag last week and found it quite fun and challenging. If any of you have done the 8.8 mile circuit hike, how does it compare to some of the harder miles that you have had to hike along the appalachian trail (ie: Blood Mountain, the rocks of PA, The White Mountains)

I love the hike of Old Rag,I think it is the most fun hike of Va,Ive taken grandchildren, children & friends. How does it compare to the AT,well in ME in the Moohesoc Notch its about the same, youll love it if you liked Old Rag,Just after the notch you go straight up the arm,no switchbacks just rocks then a beautifuf pond at the top.I throught Blood Mt was pretty tame.I hope you get to hike the AT soon.Remember, Its not the miles its the smiles.

old rag with a full pack is about as challenging as any 9 mi on AT, big difference is almost any day on a through hike even in the white mtns most try for 15 or more. So if you do old rag + at least 6 with a full pack then you have equalled what would be highly strenuous day anywhere on the AT

Old Rag is easy, as well as the rest of VA compared to TN, NC, and GA. Old Rag is just technical, in that it requires some rock climbing to get around. GA/NC requires you to be in shape. 8 miles in GA is like 15-18 here in VA.

I think that Old Rag is a good day hike, but when you are doing a week-long section or through hike, Old Rag doesn’t add up to GA, NC and TN. But it is representative and an excellent trainer. Good Luck!
