I’m 52 and feel like 20, if your like me that makes you about 41. You’re not old you’re just a seasoned hiker. We may be a little slower but we see more.

The AT makes you feel young again. I’m 56 and have been section hiking the trail for the last 4 years.

We’re not old , we’re just getting better. I will be starting my thru-hike on the AT next year and will have just turned 62.

Wild Hare,
Trog is an amazing guy, I put some miles in with him. He is without peer the most focused thru-hiker I've met. Hearing that he finished his hike after all the setbacks he went through has been a real inspiration to me.

In 2006 March-April, my husband and I will be hiking the AT. I am 65, my husband is 58. I can’t wait.

This will be the seventh season of my AT section hike and I’ll probably be celebrating my 64th birthday on the trail. Hope to summit Katahdin in mid-August. You may be passing me - I certainly am the slowest backpacker on the AT. This has been the trip of a lifetime for me! Except for NH, I loved just about every mile. Good luck to all of you senior thru’s - I know you can do it! Two Hats

When I was young everything seamed to be a race. If I could hike 15 miles today maybe I could do 18 tomorrow. Hiking fast meant watching where you stepped and not stopping long to look around much. Are we out there to see how fast or far we can go in one day or to enjoy life, the views and the out doors?
My youngest son is 23, he did the entire presidential range in one day a couple years ago in the winter. Big woop, What do you think he saw?
I know a guy that said he’s only pasted two people all the time he’s been hiking, a nun and a cripple and he said the nun gave him a run for his money. Now that’s something to talk about. How old was the nun? Did she have shorts on? Were you praying that you’d beat her?
And to think I used to want to go fast.
Older, wiser, slower = Better

I will start my hike in March 2006 and will trun 57 on the trail! It is all I can think about. The more you hike the younger you become.

My wife and I are 37. Too old to probably keep pace with the 18 year old crowd. We are going to attempt section hiking the AT this season with 3 young children. My guess is that after our first four day hike, I’ll have aged by twenty or so years. I’ll then fit right in with the 60 year olds that posted the above messages. It’s tough to find a nanny with hiking experience.
