One-Leg - Appalachian Trail

I saw One-Leg in the Smokeys this week. He broke his super-leg. The computer went out near Derricks Knob and was like a gate hinge. He put a splint on it and tried to get off the mountain and fell numerous times. I saw him again at Standing Bear Hostel, he and his wife were delivering a dog to another hiker (dogs are not allowed in the Smokeys). He said the parts for his leg were on there way and he should be back on the trail by Sunday. He seems to be have a great time. He told me he fell about 30 feet on Albert Mt.

He fed and shuttled about 40 hikers this last week from Newfound Gap, Gatlinburg, Standing Bear and the Post Office. Only had one hiker quite and go home at Gatlinburg.

We found the young man from our hometown that we talk to before his hike. His trail name is “Ice Breaker.” He is having a great hike!

If you are near the Trail, get out and help some hikers with rides. Happy Trails

good to hear he no longer needs donations… if he can feed and shuttle 40 people around in a motorhome, and pay for campgrounds every night, i dont think he is hurting for cash…(yea im sure they took donations for shuttles n food, but still) i wonder why on earth they are paying for weekly campgrounds just to be able to sleep in their car(motorhome). if they are “so hard up for cash”??.. old motorhomes dont exactly get great gas mileage!

maybe because its OPM? Other Peoples Money??
and what about schooling for all those kids? if they are home schooling then how come they dont go into public free librarys? if they did they would know that there are free computers there that he or they could use to update the journal…

yea the guy is disabled and all the power to him for tryn to do what he has set out to do… but the whole thing stinks of being a bogus ripoff of the AT community

enough of this…

just wanted to say thanks again for the magic. Some people take the time to make my hike a truely special thing, and you are one of them. Say hi to your kids for me and I wish you and your family the best.

Just wanted to say that I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours with Scott, his wife, and six kids yesterday. These are wonderful people; maybe the most polite well-brought up children I’ve seen in years. There have been a lot of unkind and untrue words said about these folks, particularly as regards their finances, concern for their children, etc. I suggest that people refrain from this sort of thing unless they know the facts; on another occasion in the past, I made similar remarks about a family I didn’t know personally, and I regret that I did so. Scott and his family are fine folks, I hope they have a great trip, and I hope many of you get the chance to meet them.

Everytime a post comes up about One Leg and family, there are always negative replies.I would love to know what the h— their motives are, especially the ones that want to remain unknown. Are they that insecure in themselves that they resort to negatives about a hiker with one leg?I can only imagine what their own life is like.Oh well, they are probably some of the ones that ate the familys food and, were shutteled places. To all the people that have met and hiked with Scott…Your positive replies were great.I’m sure Scott and his family are great people, regardless of what SOME people think,But then, who gives a RRA’s.:boy

I made a typo in my post. Flame and I shuttled the 40 hikers. It should have said “We” instead of “He.” Although, Scott (One-Leg) was shuttling some hikers, but I don’t know how many. That motorhome?? is a van. We offered to find them a place to stay while in Gatlinburg and One-leg turned it down. He said “we just need a campsite.” He is a super nice guy and has a sweet family. I’m like you Bill, some of these nameless people should find some worthy cause to go after and leave the hiker community alone.

JayBird you need to go with us sometime to Newfound Gap and do Magic. Maybe next year? Happy trials. P.S. GA-ME '02

Nice post as “a hiker” above. You could land a job with the media as one of those “anomynous” sources they quote in their daily liberal lies.

A Hiker?

Those who take time out of their day to criticize Scott, his family, and whatever else they have no firsthand knowledge of REEK of rabid rightwing hate-mongering, not anything remotely liberal.

Hats off to Scott for his unique attempt to hike the A.T., and for making it a complete family experience. I bet those kids are learning more right now than they would in any public OR private school. Hope Scott makes it.

Those who resort to stereotypes and name-calling like “liberal lies” and “rabid rightwing hate-mongering” REEK of weak minds, lack of critical thinking skills, and low self-esteem.

Attack ideas, not people. And do it on another forum - this is for hiking, not politics (unless they relate to hiking).

Funny how the idea of someone hiking 2000 miles to prove that a disability can’t keep him down SOUNDS like a noble one, but every thread about him on this forum shows just how ignoble people can be.

It’s common on this site because it’s common in the real world. People are most unwilling to accept others for who they are, and not who they remind the critic of based on their stereotypes. Something you see on the internet and in starbucks, but not that much on the trail. Many people view our popular culture as more “advanced” than before. In my view, increasing distractions from nature will only serve to reinforce lazy minds and rational bigotry. No wonder we all like trails so much.

Let’s “chill” and get out there:)
