Yes. Anything from Onion Valley is in the bear canister zone.

There are bear boxes from onion valley to forester pass. Beyond forester you need bear cans.

You’ll see when you get your permit that you are legally required to have the canister. It says so, on the permit, that all backpackers entering there need canisters. The bear boxes are supposedly for thru-hikers and emergency situations. I’m not saying it makes sense.
