Here’s a new one:

I’ll be working in Mammoth for a couple weeks in late July. Afterwards, i’ll probably have about 6-10 days to hike. I’ve done the JMT and PCT. I have some interest in getting some more 14ers, and Tyndall, Williamson, and Langely would be the ones i haven’t summitted that are my skill level.

But i’m curious to just get out the maps and do something unstructured and meandering. Maybe go in from Bishop Pass, wind my way across to the west side visitor’s center? Combine some High Sierra Route with some High Sierra Trail? The possibilities are endless.

What would you do?

After we finished the JMT in 07 we had time left over so we did a 4 day hike from Onion Valley, westward ovaer Kearsarge Pass, and down Kings Canykon to Roads End on the west side of the Sierras. It really doesn’t take 4 days but we took our time and enjoyed the spectacular scenery while making an east to west crossing of the Sierras.

I would buy a ticket to Kauai, hike the Kalalau Trail & hang out with the ‘Outlaws’ for a week.

Kauai might be in the works for June, but with the Sierra that close in July, i have to hike it.

Drive to the Shepherd Pass trailhead near Independence. Do Shepherd Pass, hang a left at the top and do Tyndall and Williamson (if open). Join the PCT at Tyndall, head north 1/4 mile and then head west into the Upper Kern where you have access to the Great Western Divide peaks. If you’re still game, head south to Junction Meadow (the one on the Kern - not the one on Bubbs Creek)and go west on the Colby Pass Trail to access the Kaweahs.

As good as the Sierra gets.

Be sure to hit the Hot Springs in the Valley below mammoth you can drive to. Check out Hot Springs of the Eastern Sierra. THere mostly located about three miles down the Benton crossing road from 395. Ask any local how to get to Wild Willies, Hilltop, or the Crab Cooker. All are on BLM land, and are free. No rules.

We did two high routes above the JMT, from South Lake to Shepard Pass once, and one from Onion Valley to Whitney. Both were about 2/3 cross country, off the JMT.

Route one: South lake, Dusy Basin, Barrett Lakes, Palisade Lake, Palisade Basin, Twin Lakes, Woods Lake, Shepard lake, and out Shepard Pass. Many peaks climbed along the way, including Agissiz, North Palisade, Sill, Jepson, Split, Colluseum, Cedric Wright.

Route 2: Onion Valley to Woods river valley, Flower Lake, over Kearsearge Pass to Bubbs Creek, over Forester Pass to Wright lakes, to Wallace lakes, over Trail Crest to the Portal and/or to summit of Whitney. Peaks climbed: Split, Bernard, Russel, Constitution, Carrillion, Tunnabora.
