My son and I will be hiking part of the AT just after Christmas. I know it is dear hunting time, I think! Does anyone out there know where i can get a “blaze orange” water proof pack cover? Will there be hunters along the GA and NC section of the AT at this time?

Love this forum!!!

I believe deer hunting season is over in NC and TN now. However, orange is always a good idea. I saw several hunters on a trip over Thanksgiving weekend. There are actually some deer-stands within sight of the trail near Tenn.91 at Iron Mountain.

I will also be out for four days after Christmas. Hopefully we’ll see some snow. Have fun and be safe.

Deer season in North Georgia ends Jan 1. Until then, it’s not a bad idea to wear some orange just in case, but the times you have to be most concerned is around opening day in mid-October when everybody is out trying to get first-divs on the game and the leaves are still up. You can get an orange cap, vest or equivalent at any Wal-Mart for less than $5.

In some states. Make sure it passes for blaze Orange or international Orange standards. They get pretty hard on that crap.:rolleyes

My Frogg Toggs are bright orange. Rain equals poor sight distance but you can see me coming a mile away.

Just checked: NC western deer season ends December 11th. Bear season lasts until January 1st.

Check with ATC before purchasing the orange pack cover. If memory serves, the cover from ATC is for specific packs. (ie. external frame???!!!)

All sorts of blaze orange stuff for sale at Walmart cheap. Check out the hunting section. You can also buy those blaze orange plastic trash bags somewhere too.

A hiker was shot a few years ago by a hunter in Bland area, VA. The hiker was not wearing blaze orange, and was shot by a large caliber mussle loader weapons. He is lucky to be alive and still hiking.

So wear that blaze orange. It’s better than getting shot. See you out there. :cheers

A similar thing happened near Suches GA (Woody Gap) I think the same year. Muzzle loaders (aka primitive weapons) are allowed to start about a week before regular gun season. Usually the leaves are still up at that time(Mid-Oct) making visibility slim. After the leaves fall I believe it’s much safer because you can see so clearly for a long way in the woods. By the way, worse than the lack of orange, don’t carry anything that looks like a whitetail!
