Oregon Fires - Pacific Crest Trail

Howdy, to preface this - i know nothing about forest fires and you should probably follow the advice of the forest service.

For hikers south of the Lake Georges fire (McKenzie Pass going north) i walked from McKenzie to Big Lake this am, little smoke, some smouldering logs and a couple mounds of ash - nothing that should stop anyone from going through there (again, my opinion. The forest service still has the area closed) I didn’t see any crews though.

I’m looking at a Situation Map (8/29) of the Puzzle fire right now. I see a detour around the fire past carl lake, junction lake and patsy lake, rejoining the pct south of cathedral rocks. Though the fire hawk shows spot fires west of this detour (and fairly close) the east margin of the main fire seems to have hit treeline (or otherwise treeless areas). There are lots of bailouts to the east.

I’m curious if anyone has other info, like whether or not the FS is serious about that $5,000 fine - b/c my detour goes right through their heliport. Without some more info, looks like i’m hitching to ollalie.

Best, be safe.

Dude,

Hitch to Olallie. Regardless of fines, and whether there is a fire on the actual trail or not, the trail is closed because fire is unpredictable and unsafe. You can’t get to Canada if you’re dead.

Is this the Jeffereson Wilderness? man that place was ablaze in '03 too. Island Mama and I had to hitch to Olallie. It’s not the easiest hitch. We actually met a guy who gave us a ride in Rusty’s van (as in Hard TIme Hollow)!

Might I suggest our strategy? Hitch a ride to Detroit (OR) and then to Brightenbush Hot Springs. While you soak, talk to people in the tubs about what you’re doing, the fire, Olallie, you get the picture - then your golden. Or at least wrinkled.

Look for Hawk - he’s sympathetic to hikers.

thanks for the advice - i skipped to olallie, caught a ride with a guy who was transporting many jars of minnows. It worked out for both of us - he needed someone to keep the minnows from spilling. I’m in portland now, lovin this hike.

hi john, i hope that this e-mail gets to you. because i am a rookie on this machine. the last time that i saw you was near VVR, i hiked to yosemitte, then back to tuoallamy meadows and then to south lake tahoe where i got off the trail.i said that i would hike as long as it was fun, it started to get lonely, and so i threw in the towel. write, your friend tim
