Southernman, the best place for you to start would be in purchasing Yogi’s PCT handbook, I think it may be linked under books on the trailjournals home page. This is a comprehensive guide telling all you need to know, gear, strategy, start dates, town info. etc. for planning a hike on the PCT. It also gives details on other literature you will need to purchase, essentially a data book listing landmarks, terrain, and distance, along with a series of three guidebooks that will provide you with maps and other trail background.
Best of luck on your journey, and my compliments on using your hike to promote such a worthy cause.

By the way, are you the same Southernman from AT '04 who was hiking to raise awareness for his mothers condition? Just trying to figure out if I met you or not. Do you recall riding along with one of the hostel owners in Maine to retrieve a wayward hiker from Rumford? Just curious.
Feel free to contact me if you need any more advice, or just post your questions as I know there are a ton of us here fresh off the PCT dying for something to talk about!

I second that! The off season is for daydreamin and talkin trail! Yogis notes were where I started after deciding to head west after an 03 thru on the AT. Great resource. Talking to and picking the brains of PCT hikers was the quickest way for me to learn about the differences of the PCT VS AT and plan for the hike. Feel free to email me to. Have a great hike the PCT is amazing!!:cheers

You can always buzz me to talk trail, also. I miss is something fierce and would be totally willing to give feedback on various decisions.

P.S. Yogi’s book was the most helpful thing I owned.

I’m going Sobo, starting probably June 24. Anyone else going south? (I have a feeling it’s going to be a quiet trip…)
